STL generator / Parts by size

2x1 bin STL compatible with Gridfinity grid dimensions, with a divider

A bin two cells wide and one deep on the 42 mm grid: 83.5 by 41.5 mm, 42 mm high, split into two compartments. The STL is generated by software from the values below, with no third-party model files.

Why a 2x1 instead of two 1x1 bins

One 2x1 bin with a divider holds the same two groups of parts as two single bins, but it prints as one piece, has one shared wall instead of two walls and a gap, and lifts out of the drawer in one hand. Each compartment here is about 40 by 39 mm inside. Remove the divider, by setting the compartments across to 1, and the same bin takes items up to 81 mm long: hex keys, a small ruler, marker pens laid diagonally.

What to measure

The footprint follows from the grid: two cells of 42 mm less the clearance. What you measure is the tallest thing that goes in and the height available. A total height of 42 mm is six of the usual 7 mm steps and leaves about 36 mm of depth inside, after the 4.75 mm feet and the 1.2 mm floor. If the bin lives in a drawer, measure from the top of your base plate to the underside of the drawer opening and stay below that. If long items are the reason for the bin, measure the longest one and compare it with the 81 mm inside length.

Clearance, wall and material

The clearance to the grid stays at 0.5 mm, so the bin measures 83.5 mm where two cells are 84 mm. Note that the clearance is taken off once per bin, not once per cell: a 2x1 bin is 0.5 mm longer than two 1x1 bins side by side with their gap. Walls, floor and divider are 1.2 mm. The divider also braces the two long walls, which otherwise bow inwards slightly on an 83 mm span in PETG. This bin has two plain square feet, one per cell, each 35.6 mm wide, with no stacking lip on the rim.

Printing

Print feet down. The floor spans the 6.4 mm channel between the two feet as a short bridge, which needs no support; the ledge around the outside of the feet is a flat overhang of about 3 mm and can sag a little, so use supports there only if the underside has to look clean. Layer height 0.2 mm, three perimeters. Check the first print in your own base plate before making a set, since plates from different sources differ by a few tenths.

The bin on a 42 mm base grid needs a licence key: without one the generator shows the model locked, lists the values from this link and fills them in as soon as you unlock. The fitted drawer organiser bin is the free model and downloads with no key.
